nter School on Wearable Robotics Dissemination of knowledge and training of=
students in aspects of bio-robotics is a key mission of the Bio-Robotics T=
echnical Committee. To this end, our members were co-organizers and speaker=
s at a recent Winter School on Wearable Robotics, held this past January in=
Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. Co-organized by TC member Prof. Etienne Burdet, t=
he purpose of the winter school was to address the underlying topics of wea=
rable robotics and provide hands-on experience in their design, development=
and application. An international collection of speakers presented from ac=
ademia and industry, including TC member Prof. Elliott Rouse. Students atte=
nded from all around the world, and were trained in cutting-edge aspects of=
wearable robotics. Students participated in =E2=80=98mini-projects=E2=80=
=99 where they worked with real systems, developing control systems, bio-in=
spired interfaces, and designs (Fig. 1). Example mini-projects included the=
testing of how leg muscle electromyogram (EMG) changed as a result of wear=
ing a passive exoskeleton designed for skiing assistance, as well as detect=
ion of hand grasp type and force using EMG from the forearm, among many oth=
er fascinating projects. In addition to an outstanding technical program, a=
ttendees were able to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor activities, i=
ncluding skiing and snowboarding (Fig. 1). The Winter School was generously=

Effect of a Soft Robotic Sock Device on Lower Extremity Rehabilitation

following Stroke: New Early Access Article from JTEHM





In this preliminary clinical study, we tested the effect of a novel soft robotic sock device, capable of providing assisted ankle exercise, in improving blood flow in the lower limb for the prevention of complications of stroke such as deep vein thrombosis and joint contracture. The results of the clinical trial show that the sock device improves venous blood flow in the early phase of device use and assists with ankle joint exercise.
