Thanks for your interest in attending a Crashcourse in R Workshop for Micro= bial Ecologists. The workshop will run from August 28-30 near the Detroit = airport. The workshop is being filled on a first come, first served basis.= The workshop is geared towards people with interests in microbial ecology= that would like to learn R or to learn it better so you shouldn't feel lik= e this isn't for you if you are a beginner. I assume no previous computer = programming experience. The workshop is an even blend of lecture/discussio= n and hands on use of R with real data and typically uses mothur output fil= es as a starting point. Here is a rough outline of the content that past w= orkshops have covered.
Ordination Stripcharts and box and whisker plots Line plots Barcharts Subsetting data Reading and writing data Basic parametric and non-parametric analyses
Basics: Each day there will be a lecture and discussion interspersed with= hands-on activities. The session will run from 9 to 5 with a lunch break = in the middle.
To bring: It is important that you bring a laptop to the workshop. While = it would be helpful if you came with R pre-installed, it is not that import= ant since we can do this at the workshop. We will be using R studio as a p= rogramming environment. People often find it helpful to bring along their = own data to play with after they have mastered the examples I provide. Peo= ple also find it helpful to bring a notebook for taking notes during the le= cture components. Of course, a willingness to learn, questions, and a good= sense of humor are essential!
Hotel: The workshop will be held at the LaQuinta Hotel (formerly the Lexi= ngton Hotel; 30847 Flynn Dr; Romulus, MI), which has a free shuttle to and = from the Detroit Airport (DTW; this is an International hub for Delta). We= have a block of rooms being held for you at ~$89 per night plus tax that y= ou will need to cover on your own. You can make a reservation by calling 7= 34-721-1100 and telling them that you would like to fill a reservation with= in the Schloss block. Included in that rate is a continental breakfast and= included in the cost of the course is a lunch for each day. There are a n= umber of restaurants in the area where you can have dinner.
Costs: The cost of the three-day workshop is $600. I will save a seat fo= r you when you make a $100 deposit; the full payment is due at the beginnin= g of the workshop. The easiest way to place your deposit is to use www.pay= pal.org to send the deposit to pdschloss-at-gmail.com. You need to either pay= the balance or make arrangements with me by the start of the workshop.
