Hello Ruben,
Actually, my education had a lot of biology wrapped in. My major in college was geology, but I also took a lot of biology courses as electives. I also took a minor in archaeology, which included a human forensics course. My graduate degree in vert. paleo included courses in comparative vertebrate osteology and invertebrate paleo. How to work with potential soft tissue and avoiding chemical contamination for things that need to be SEM scanned, DNA tested, etc. are largely things I picked up as a preparator. You're right that there's a much greater involvement of biology in paleontology compared to the way the science was in the past. That said, paleontology is still very much a geological science. Anyone wanting to do field work, taphonomy, paleoenvironmental analysis, etc. needs to understand how to read the rocks too. Knowledge of sediments is certainly essential for a preparator! I may be a bit biased, but I feel that it's better for someone interested in paleo to seek an educational background in geology, and pick up the biology aspect on the side. The trouble is that most schools shape their academic programs through available funding for research. Field work and lab work are expensive, so many schools do not have active field programs or maintain research collections, choosing instead to run hypothetical simulations and crunch data in lab and student research activities. While there have been declines in schools offering traditional geology and biology majors, there are now more schools offering studies in paleontology and museum studies, both of which allow students to have more options if they're able to go to those schools.
Thanks again, Michelle

How hard was it to adapt from a geology background to Paleontology which is largely a biology field. Once you get into the find bone areas, you must have some idea on basic anatomy to avoid damaging those fine structure. And I would think that increasinlgy one has to be aware of the possibility of fossilized soft tissue.
