RESISTANCE: A Note from Our Executive Director Dear Billie Family, November marks my sixth month in this treasured role of Executive Director of The Billie Holiday Theatre, and I remain committed to The Billie’s core mission of nurturing our artists, our community, and our youth in continuing to be that safe space for our stories, our truth, our voices. In these current times, we have heard directly from you how our work is even more valuable and necessary. The Billie has risen to meet moments of radical resistance, and we will and must continue to do so. Therefore for this season’s programming, we created the following statement as our north star: To be Black in America is to be in a constant state of RESISTANCE against a system designed to harm you: A resistance of anger A resistance of joy A resistance of laughter A resistance of just being while creating room to breathe and soil safe enough to grow in. The theme of “Resistance” is nothing new, but through The Billie lens, we honor our Bed-Stuy and Central Brooklyn roots; pay homage to the artistic leaders (past and present) in music, dance, visual arts, literary arts, and yes, theatre; and uplift new and upcoming artistic leaders who are now at the forefront of this resistance movement. The Billie is that the “room to breathe and the soil safe enough to grow in.” We look forward to welcoming you this month as we move forward in this season of “RESISTANCE.” Your support is invaluable to us. We are humbled that you continue to come home to The Billie. Thank you! Shadawn Smith Executive Director The Billie Holiday Theatre Exercise Your Voice: Vote Tuesday! The Billie team asks you to demonstrate your own showing of resistance by voting. Early voting just ended, but you still have Tuesday, November 7, to cast your vote. If you requested and received an absentee ballot, November 7 is the last day to drop it off at a polling site or at any of the offices of the Board of Elections, or if you are mailing it in, then it’s last day for it to be postmarked. Make sure you follow the directions carefully, so you don’t have an invalid ballot. You should have received your NYC Voter’s Guide to help you know who and what is on the ballot. There are ballot referendums so make sure you flip your ballot. Please go to vote.nyc for all of your voting information. Your voice, your vote, your city. Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Wu-Tang Clan's Enter The Wu-tang (36 Chambers) November 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the Wu-Tang Clan's transformative debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The first composition from who many recognize as the greatest rap group of all time not only disrupted music, it changed the soundscape, aesthetic and vernacular of pop culture. Before going on to sell millions of records internationally, the fusion of b-boy hustler and Asian cinema introduced the world to future legends like Method Man, Raekwon the Chef, Ghostface Killah and of course the Wu-Tang leader and maestro RZA. To commemorate this essential body of work, hosts of the HARD2EARN podcast (Torae and Bonsu Thompson) will revisit and discuss each of the album’s tracks in front of a live audience at Brooklyn's historic Billie Holiday Theatre aka "The Billie" (where Wu-Tang recorded much of their debut). Special guests who played a significant role in the making of the album will be invited to join the discussion. The lobby reception will be hosted by Brooklyn Arts Council, Jack Daniels and Brooklyn's own Czen Restaurant. With Hip-Hop still celebrating its 50th anniversary, there's a cultural responsibility to pay homage to the rap group that contributed extensively to its past 30 years.
