Ukraine is hardly a perfect nation, and the Creator of the World knows
full well the crimes that the Ukrainian people conducted during the
Holocaust, which rank as the most brutal in history. But even after 3
generations, we Jews haven't forgotten how crimes of the Ukrainian
people destroyed Jewish civilization, any more than we have forgotten
the crimes of the Poles, Germans, French, Belorussians, Romanians, and
most of all we haven't forgotten the Crimes of the Russians, whose
murder of Jews, not to mention other communities, began long before the
Holocaust, even before WWI, and continued unabated into the 1980's.
As much as we remember this, after generations, we also come to forgive.
Sins of the fathers are not visited onto the sons. Nor can we deny
forgiveness, as it is deserved, any more than we can forget the crimes.
Regardless, nothing the modern Ukrainians have done remotely justifies
the brutal suppression of the execution of their peaceful Democracy by
Russian or Belorussian armies. The accusations by Putin carry no more
truth than Midrash we learn on Yom Kippur:
The head of the idolater swelled with malice and commanded to fill his
palace with shoes.
He summoned ten great scholars who understood the Law and all of its
intricacies.
[He ordered]: “decide this case objectively and don't distort it with
intentional trickery, but rather bring it out to its true light:
If a man was found to have kidnapped one of his brothers, from among the
Children of Yisrael; treating him as a slave and selling him.”
They answered him:
“The kidnapper should be put to death.”
The pretense is well known to us. The misappropriation of Justice to
justify vengeance and brutality is more common than we might expect.
One can't justify the brutal war against the Ukraine based on 80 year
old crimes. Nor can Putin gain our sympathy for his hateful act based
on imagined crimes which have little basis in fact other than a tenuous
guilt of the past. We are not saying that the Ukraine is perfect, and
that its political manipulations are without corruption. What we are
saying is that one can not use the echos of the Holocaust to justify not
just an bloody war on the people of the Ukraine, but we also remember
the twisted application of force against the people of Belarus who had
taken to the streets to protest for their freedom no less than 3 times
since the fall of the USSR.
Lastly, to make things even worst, we can not help but point out the
cruelty of threatening the entire planet with a nuclear holocaust to
justify fraudulent calls for de-Nazification of a free and peaceful
state, and those nations who act to protect it as a matter of principle
and ethics.
The Russian despot has made clear that this generation is to inherit, if
we survive this current crisis, the delicate task of ending the
proliferation and threat of global nuclear war by an emotionally
unstable dictator and those who would follow in his footsteps.
