Dear Ruben,
*We had a security situation this past Shabbat.
An older Arab woman stabbed a resident of Kiryat Arbanear the steps of Ma’arat HaMachpela. The young Rabbi wrapped in a tallit (prayer shawl) was lightly wounded and the terrorist swiftly apprehended by the IDF. The surveillance equipmentthat recorded the attack was purchased with funds donated during our security campaignearlier this year. I’m in awe of the donors who sponsored this camera system and honored to play a role in the partnership of saving and protecting lives.
We mourn the passing of Rabbi Eliezer Waldman (84) ztz"l. He was among the leadersof the return to Hebron in 1968, co-foundedYeshivat Nir in Kiryat Arba, and was a national leader as a Member of Knesset. His efforts will be immortalizedin the history books about modern Israel. May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
Rabbi Moshe Goodman has completed several years of his insights into the weekly Torah portion, and you may have noticed that he’s started a new project. Each week he features a work of art by Hebron artist Baruch Nachshon a"hwith a Painting on the Parsha. See this week’s piece below!
Save the date – next Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec 28-29), we will be running our year-end campaign, when generous matchers will be doubling all donations.
To make the maximum impact and DOUBLE your support for the Jewish Community of Hebron, don’t donate today!
We know you’re excited, but please try to wait until Tuesday (when you’ll still have the ability to receive the 2021 tax deduction).
Shabbat Shalom, and Blessings from Hebron,*

Thank you to Renee Chernin for sponsoring this week's Soldier Rest Area refreshments and Shabbat packages in memory of Shlomo ben Tzudik haLevi, Dewey Chernin, a"h. "Our Dad served in the USAF in WW2 and afterward, flew Shoah survivors to DP camps and hospitals. He was very proud to be a Jew and did what he could to help Israel. 25th Yahrzeit is 18 Tevet. May his memory be a blessing, and my G-d watch over the soldiers who guard the place of our Avot and Imahot."

IN MEMORY
Rabbi Waldman ztz"l and his wife Ruthi arrived in Hebron in 1968 at the Park Hotel and ever since then have been instrumental in the renewal of the Jewish community. Thanks to the leadership of Rabbi Waldman and others, the modern Jewish Community exists and thrives. May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may his memory be a blessing
We remember beloved colleague, Gennady Kaufman hyd, who was attacked by a terrorist in December 2015 and later succumbed to his wounds.
Please see pictures below of "Gennady's Garden," which was planted to honor his memory and add light and beauty to the grounds of the Ma'arah which he tended with honor and care.
May his memory be a blessing
VIDEO ON THE SCENE
Rabbi Simcha Hochbaum asks what makes a good leader? The answer is someone who can hear the cry of their fellow louder than their own comfort - someone like Moses.
Rabbi Waldman ztz"l speaking at a AFSI Panel Discussion celebrating 50 years since the liberation of Hebron.
SEEN ON THE SCENE
IDF Major General Ori Gordin, pictured here with Hebron Mayor, Rabbi Hillel Horowitz, visited Hebron last week. We also welcomed IDF personnel Lt. Col. Shiran Hashai, Lt. Col. Aharoni Levy, Major Hatem Saeed, Major Benyahu Amrani and Lt. Le-Anne Samadja and community leaders participated in this important meeting.
It has been cold and rainy in Israel this week, in addition to the Sabbatical year where we cannot tend the gardens, so please enjoy these pictures of the beautiful "Gennady Garden" outside Ma'arat HaMachpela, honoring our colleague Gennady Kaufman hyd.

PARSHAT SHEMOT December 24-25, 2021
*The Donkey of Avraham Avinu, Moshe Rabeinu and Mashiach* By: Rabbi Moshe Goodman, Kollel Ohr Shlomo, Hebron
Nachshon’s painting here makes a comparison between the Donkey of Avraham Avinu, Moshe Rabeinu and Mashiach. The donkey, in Hebrew "hamor," is a symbol of the "homer", I.e the "material world" which the donkey was meant to carry. Indeed, the Exodus story which this parsha begins, is deeply connected with this symbol and the intricacy involved with it.
