| SUBJECT | Subject: [Hangout - NYLXS] Resuming ny.pm social meetings

We should talk about how and when we can resume New York Perlmonger
social meetings.
As best I can tell the last social meeting we had was Jan 27 2020 at the
Peculier Pub. (We co-sponsored one tech meeting with NYCBUG on March 3
2020 and had a couple of tech meetings via Zoom over the past year.)
On the one hand ...
1. The pandemic in the U.S. has been receding for some time.
2. Street/bar/restaurant life in New York City is clearly on the upswing.
3. Many people are now fully vaccinated.
On the other hand ...
1. Worldwide the pandemic is worse than ever. In many countries the
more dangerous "delta" variant is outpacing vaccinations. (See:

2. The government (which in this case means the Cuomo administration) is
permitting things to re-open with a much looser definition of "herd
immunity" (say, 70% of the population *partially* vaccinated) than
public health people were using early in the pandemic (say, 80% of the
population *fully* vaccinated). There are many neighborhoods in NYC
where vaccination rates are poor, whether due to access problems or to
ideological resistance.
3. An ny.pm social meeting is an event where, by definition, you are
unmasked and where you are not practicing social distancing.
The implication I draw from these considerations is that we can resume
social meetings provided that we ask everyone attending to be fully
vaccinated ... where fully vaccinated means you've had both shots
(assuming you're getting one of the two-shot jabs) and have had time for
that inoculation to achieve effectiveness.
Which then suggests that we could resume social meetings starting in
early August. That would allow people 1 week to schedule an initial
vaccination, 3 weeks between shots, and 2 weeks for the vaccination to
become fully effective.
