The result... 500,000 lives lost, headed for 600,000,and Politics continues to grin, and Common Sense has been removed from the stadium.
~~~ There is no "common sense" answers. Personally, I would never had any lockdown and I think that doing everything possible to keep social life and the economy up and running in the face of an epidemic is the governments first job.
I would have fortified our stripped down healthcare system which have been understaffed for decades, thrown out Obamacare health organizations systems that are starving providers, and spead of the FDA's approval for vaccines, and accepted the increased risks in a crisis. I would bring ashore PPE production and essential healthcare industries that are essential to the national security.
In the end, a strong economy is all that can defeat disease by having infrastructure for drugs, research, clean water, and uncrowded housing. It is better to have COVID-19 in the US than disentary in Somalia.
There would be no masking mandate accept on public transportation and airports. Limited quarantines would have been implemented with standard gumshoe tracking techniques to attack hot zones. There would be mandatory vaccination.
I would have encouraged decentralization of populations, opening summer camps and temporary housing as needed in rural areas so city dwelers could escape. These are all techniques that have been used in previous generations. I would also take away Andrew Cuomo's and Anthony Faucci's barber and manicurist.
I would trust that people understand there own tolerance for danger and had left restaurants, etc open. At the start of the Pandemic people stopped going to Madison Square Garden. They didn't need help to be told not to do that.
I would had made the information clear, especially the age based and comorbidity data, so people could protect themselves, rather than confusing the data with misinformation about racial politics. I take it that these are ALL COMMON SENSE things to do. I am sure others disagree.
I would have NEVER have sent infected patients to nursing homes. I would never had the testing fiasco that happened early in the pandemic and had used the German tests.
By protecting the elderly, I could have cut deaths in half... at least.
Most of all, I would ask people, what do we do if COVID-19 can not be defeated? It might be with us for a long time. Are you ready to be locked down in your house for the rest of your life, and to never have open schools for children again?
I would have allowed for vaccines to be distributed and purchased by normal channels and centered vaccination around existing nursing orgaziaitons and the family MD, and the used the US Army reserve to suppliment this. This would have increased availablility and production and we would likely all be vaccinated by now. And then there was the sputnik vaccine from Russia that was all but ignored by the US. That was a huge mistake.
why are we double the deaths, and double the amount of critical patients than other countries? and why are we #10 globally for deaths per 1 million population, Yeah we have a big population but so does China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Nigeria, Pakistan."
All fine countries with reliable data, political freedom and great economies. The reason I was so blunt is because it is a mantra that is wrong. The US mortality rate is just not that high, especially when compared to other western countries and compared to previous pandemics. Let me know when 30% of Congress dies of this plague. You can bet a different response then. The disease, IMO, is just not virulent enough to justify the extreme measures we have already taken. It will take YEARS to shake out the affect on our economy, if we aren't heading straight into a decade long depression right now. Additionally, the local governments threw fire on the pandemic by exposing the elderly to the virus. The virus itself was likely in the US since November, 3 months before it made the press. If you wantg to point to anything, blame our very integrated global economy and high number of foreign traveling immigrants and tourists. The idea that would could have taken measures like New Zealand, IMO, is laughable. That would have thrown the world into a mass famine, if it is not going to happen anyway.
We have been making wrong political decisions about the epidemic threat since Joe Biden and Barack Obama decided to sell off all the PPEs emergency supply and allowed for overseas production of essential medical equipment after MERS. They are directly responsibly for the PPE shortages that we faced early in the pandemic. And then we tossed our elderly to the wolves, especially Andrew Cuomo in NY. That single act literally accounts for half the deaths during the peak.
Regardless, wishful thinking aside, we have really only TWO tools to fight this virus. One is treatments, and the other is vaccination. He have made considerable advances in treatment and it shows in the enlarging gap between positive cases and hospitalizations, and hospitalizations and deaths. And more treatment options are on the way as has been reported coming out of Israel. Treatment can only be improved with increased capacity in our local hospitals and funding healthcare providers who have been cut to the bone by politicians and the vultures in the medical benefits ogonology through obamacrare.
As for vaccines, it took FOUR DAYS to create the Moderna Vaccine. Everything else was FDA foot dragging. Intransigent, empowered, federal bureaucrats at the FDA have used fear to whip up political backlash which empowers them, but has screwed the rest of us. We should have had worldwide distribution of these vaccines 6 months ago. The Russians did it.
The idea that we can just safely stick everyone in a safe box until this blows over is a complete fantasy. CHILDREN are being abused on a massive scale. A whole generation now has lost a year of child development and socialization. And there is NO END yet in site. We let fear mongers make decisions and we get no where. That is all my opinion based on a broad review of the facts. You are entitled to your own opinion, but don't shackle me with a "Green Passport" which is nothing better than a permanent political tracking device for the general population. My family survived the Nazi's who tattooed them like cattle in order to track them and more efficiently control and murder them. The "Green Passport" and other ingenious inventions out of such bastions of Democracy and freedom such as Singapore and Beijing can keep there lies, and deceit. We will muddle through with our political freedom intact and our economy sustained. Hopefully we will prevent a world-wide famine on a biblical scale, which is what has been projected, at the same time.
