SAN DIEGO — The sight of more than 10,000 people gathered to watch a
neutral-site playoff game amid a pandemic added another amazing chapter
to baseball’s strangest year. The Braves defeated the Dodgers at Globe
Life Field on Tuesday beneath an announced crowd of 10,700 at Game 1 of
the National League Championship Series.
“I thought it was pretty cool,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker, who
said he watched the game following Houston’s 4-2 loss in Game 2 of the
ALCS. “I thought it was real cool. We’re looking forward to some fans in
the stands.”
Fans will be permitted inside Globe Life Field for the remainder of the
NLCS and World Series. For each game, Major League Baseball made
available approximately 11,500 tickets for 10,550 fans to be spread
throughout the ballpark and 950 others in suites.
Fans are not allowed inside Petco Park for the American League
Championship Series between the Astros and Rays, but families of both
teams are in attendance.
“I think we all miss fans, especially during playoff time,” Baker said.
All but one.
Veteran starter Zack Greinke said Tuesday it’s “nice” to not have fans
in the stands, but he acknowledged “most people like it.” Greinke
battles social anxiety disorder, has dealt with depression and was
brutally honest Tuesday regarding his indifference to a crowd.
“There’s no one trying to talk to you and asking for autographs and
wanting pictures and all that stuff. I don’t like any of that stuff,”
Greinke said. “It’s nice not having them, for me. Most people like it. I
don’t like it.”
