Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan vetoed a city budget proposal that would have
made significant cuts to the police department Friday.
The proposed budget called for about $4 million in cuts to the
department’s $170 million budget for the reminder of the fiscal year. It
included a $20,000 pay cut for Police Chief Carmen Best.
Ms. Best, the city’s first Black police chief, announced plans to step
down after the budget proposal was approved by the city council.
The proposed budget changes also would have eliminated about 100 of the
agency’s 1,400 police officers and reduced spending on training,
recruitment and specialized departments.
Cities around the country have been faced with pressure to overhaul
local police departments and cut spending for policing amid sometimes
violent protests against racial injustice and police brutality since the
May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
Ms. Best was the latest of several high-profile police leaders to
announce plans to leave their jobs in the wake of Mr. Floyd’s death and
nationwide protests.
“I respectfully veto the 2020 budget and will continue conversations
between my office and the council on how we can partner to make needed
changes in a consistent, thoughtful, and deliberate manner,” Ms. Durkan
said in a statement.
Ms. Best, who remains on the job until Sept. 2, said during a news
conference announcing her retirement plans that the proposed pay cut
“felt very vindictive and very punitive.” She said at the time didn’t
want her agency to be impacted by the focus on her.
