Thanks to Timm for presenting, Softvision for sponsoring and Charlie for organizing!
I was glad to see participants from the U.K. and the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Toronto Perlmonger chapters!
Some technical points and questions and things to keep in mind for the next time we do an online presentation ...
1. Like everybody I've had a lot of Zoom meetings over the past month. This was the first time the meeting was using Zoom Pro. For some reason, it seemed to be an enormous draw for my laptop (Ubuntu Linux 18.04; 4 cores). As measured by 'htop', at one point the zoom executable was using an astounding 228% of CPU. At peak, the Load factor was over 9! It appeared that there were more than a dozen Zoom threads present at any time, each of which was using 6 to 8% of CPU.
At the start of the meeting the load was so high that I feared I had to reboot, as my screen was immobilized for more than 60 seconds. I shut off both Firefox and Thunderbird during the presentation. During most of the presentation the load was between 4 and 5, though at points it dipped to an acceptable 1.7.
Note that I've attended one other Zoom meeting with ~ 28 participants. That did not appear to burden the CPU as this one did. That was regular Zoom.
Any ideas on why this was happening? Can this be mitigated in the future?
2. If a meeting is going to be Zoom-cast, presenters may have to think about the typefaces they're using on their slides. The monospace Courier font used for the Perl code samples was very faint.
Again, thanks to all for participating. Jim Keenan
