SUBJECT | Subject: [Hangout - NYLXS] [mothur] Announcing an *online* mothur workshop
|
After many requests, I am excited to announce that the next mothur workshop will be held as a virtual workshop using Zoom and will run from March 30 to April 1. The workshop is being filled on a first come, first served basis. The workshop is geared towards people with diverse backgrounds so you shouldn't feel like this isn't for you if you are a beginner. I assume no previous computer programming experience. The workshop is an even blend of lecture/discussion and hands on use of mothur with real sequence data. Here is a rough outline of what the workshop schedule will look like (although it is subject to some minor changes)...
Day 1: - Overview of methods used in microbial ecology - DNA sequencing technologies - Introduction to mothur - Improving sequence quality
Day 2: - Alignment - Chimera detection - Distance calculations - Amplicon Sequence Variants - OTU identification - Sequence/OTU classification
Day 3: - Intro to quantitative ecology for microbial ecologists - Methods of measuring alpha and beta diversity - Population level analyses
Basics: As indicated above, each day there will be a lecture and discussion interspersed with hands-on activities and it will run from 9 am to 4 pm (Eastern, GMT-5). We will take an hour long break at noon for people to get lunch and will have shorter breaks in the morning and afternoon. If you would like to talk with me one-on-one to discuss your project, I can do that in the afternoon sessions, generally between 3 and 4.
Logistics: A week before the workshop I will provide you with a link to participate in the workshop. I will also provide information about what to install on your computer and where to fully participate. People often find it helpful to have their own data handy to play with after they have mastered the examples I provide. It is also helpful to have a notebook for taking notes during the lecture components. Of course, a willingness to learn, questions, and a good sense of humor are essential!
Costs: The cost of the three-day workshop is $450. I will save a seat for you once I receive your payment. The easiest way to pay is using PayPal to send money to pdschloss-at-gmail.com. I can provide a receipt by the start of the workshop
