Support World Class Art in the Heart of Bed-Stuy! Good Morning: The
Billie Holiday Theatre is one of Brooklyn's artistic and cultural
treasures. Of all the Black theaters founded in the 1960s and 1970s out
of the Black Arts Movement, by the mid-90's more than 87% had closed
their doors for good...as a Black artist who has spent my life telling
stories, that is devastating. Yet today, The Billie is the thriving
theater home to the largest African American community in the nation -
Central Brooklyn, because it is surrounded by a community that truly
cares. I just finished performing in James Sheldon's powerful
Reparations, directed by the incredible Michele Shay with a cast of
extraordinary actors at The Billie and I was deeply moved by The
Billie's commitment to telling the complex and diverse stories of people
of African descent, encouraging cross-cultural dialogues, and building
community and empathy through the power of storytelling. I hope you
