It's conceivable the Brits write it that way for the same reason. Who knows? However, I hope you are not, as it would seem is the case, ignoring my point that, in a business letter coming from you, an American using American spelling and diction, a missing period after an abbreviation creates a fleeting impression of poor literacy. Which is probably not the impression you wanted to create.
I've now explained the point twice, which is actually not one but _two_ times more than I should have had to.
And, I cannot help noticing that you deliberately ignored my question about whether respect for your audience (here and on other mailing lists) doesn't suggest you should use a spelling checker -- given that you just proved you _do_ have one and know how to use it.
The default interpretation is going to end up being 'No, I, Ruben Safir, actually don't respect my audience enough to even use a flippin' automated spelling checker.'
