Join us at Brooklyn Public Library for Citizen Folklife, a series of free d=
igital
media storytelling workshops. Go behind the scenes with folk artists and fo=
lklorists
to learn the craft of documenting oral histories and performing ethnography=
in an
intimate setting.
Citizen Folklife workshops will provide training in audio recording, interv=
iewing,
photography, and digital video making and will include a broad overview of =
the personal
and ethical aspects of community documentation. Participants will discover =
how folk
artists and folklorists document traditional practices, discuss current iss=
ues facing
Brooklyn communities, and will enjoy the opportunity to see and hear demons=
trations
of art practices from across our borough and from around the world.
Individuals may attend the full series or individual workshops. Equipment w=
ill be
provided, though if you have your own - even a smartphone - you're encourag=
ed to
bring it.

Learn interview techniques and gain audio recording skills while listening =

Session #3: Culture in Your Camera

Learn tricks and techniques to capture music, dance, and material culture w=
ith camcorders,
digital and analog cameras, and cellphones. This workshop will feature live=
music
and dance.
Session #4: You've Got It; Now What?
Monday, May 22, 7-8:30pm
Now that you have photos and videos, what do you do with them? We'll discus=
s simple
editing techniques, how to create a successful work sample, and how to shar=
e your
documentation responsibly.

Join us at Brooklyn Public Library for=
Citizen Folklife, a series of free digital media storytelling workshops. G=
o behind the scenes with folk artists and folklorists to learn the craft of=
documenting oral histories and performing ethnography in an intimate setti=
ng.
Citizen Folklife workshops will provide training in audio re=
cording, interviewing, photography, and digital video making and will inclu=
de a broad overview of the personal and ethical aspects of community docume=
ntation. Participants will discover how folk artists and folklorists docume=
nt traditional practices, discuss current issues facing Brooklyn communitie=
s, and will enjoy the opportunity to see and hear demonstrations of art pra=
ctices from across our borough and from around the world.
