SUBJECT | Subject: [Hangout of NYLXS] Is the internet dead
|
I was at a meeting yesterday where the speaker said that over 87% of all traffic today are coming from one of 4 content providers, Amazon, Google, MS and Facebook. And that reminded me that I think the internet is close to dead.
This is what I've noticed, the problem starts with the search engines. They have become a fixed game now. Usenet is not covered effectively, nor is access readily available. We are left with Stackover flow. Blogs are not being covered very well. Home Pages and personal libraries are not in search results. Mailing lists are virtually not listed. Usage for serious information has dropped like a rock. Serious Journals are now all behind DRM inforced paywalls. The library of the future is already shacked and destroyed. Its best days are behind us and the ease of getting information is virtually dead.
