EMBS Standards Committee Chair Carole Carey Speaks on the Infrastructure of Standardization
at Drexel University
The IEEE-SA and EMB has been fostering partnership with Drexel University to promote
the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental and societal
challenges. Drexel's approach is innovation driven, biomed-focused standardization
adding a new Winter 2017 curriculum, "Standardization in Action: A Global Perspective."
The 11-week interdisciplinary course included a weekly guest speaker and is designed
to guide students in thinking critically about the technical, historical, socio-legal,
and philosophical aspects of standardization, and the role of university and civil
society in facing these challenges. On March 1, Carole talked about the socio-political-
technical "Infrastructure" of standardization, "Organization and Structure of a
Standards Making Body: IEEE-SA -- A globally recognized Standards Development Organization."
The course was a synergistic joining of industry, academics and subject matter expertise
to reinforce the curriculum and to provide students with "real world" views of standards.

Tutorial 3: Continuous domain sparse recovery of biomedical image data using structured
low-rank approaches
Jong Chul Ye, from KAIST, South Korea, member of the EMBS Technical Committee on
Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing, will be organizing a tutorial at ISBI'17
on " Continuous Domain Sparse Recovery of Biomedical Image Data Using Structured
Low-rank Approaches". In this tutorial, we will provide a detailed review of recent
advances in structured low-rank matrix completion formulation, where the recovery
of a continuous domain image from its sparse measurements is considered.

Committing to Memory
Some internal help to the brain may be on the way in the form of memory prosthetics.
Once considered to be on the fringes of neuroscience, the idea of adding hardware
to the brain to help with memory has gathered steam. In fact, the age of the bionic
brain has already arrived. Neural prosthetics allow paralyzed people to move robotic
limbs, deaf people to hear through cochlear implants, and those with epilepsy to
avoid seizures. In each case, the device interacts directly with the brain, substituting
or compensating for a damaged component.

EMBS Standards Committee Chair Carole Carey Speaks on the
Infrastructure of Standardization at Drexel University
The IEEE-SA and EMB has been fostering partnership with Drexel
University to promote the importance of standards in meeting technical,
economic, environmental and societal challenges. Drexel's approach is
innovation driven, biomed-focused standardization adding a new Winter
2017 curriculum, "Standardization in Action: A Global Perspective."
The 11-week interdisciplinary course included a weekly guest speaker
and is designed to guide students in thinking critically about the
technical, historical, socio-legal, and philosophical aspects of
standardization, and the role of university and civil society in facing
these challenges. On March 1, Carole talked about the socio-political-
technical "Infrastructure" of standardization, "Organization and
Structure of a Standards Making Body: IEEE-SA -- A globally recognized
Standards Development Organization." The course was a synergistic
joining of industry, academics and subject matter expertise to
reinforce the curriculum and to provide students with "real world"
views of standards.

of Biomedical Image Data Using Structured Low-rank Approaches". In this
tutorial, we will provide a detailed review of recent advances in

Committing to Memory
Some internal help to the brain may be on the way in the form of memory
prosthetics. Once considered to be on the fringes of neuroscience, the
idea of adding hardware to the brain to help with memory has gathered
steam. In fact, the age of the bionic brain has already arrived. Neural
prosthetics allow paralyzed people to move robotic limbs, deaf people
to hear through cochlear implants, and those with epilepsy to
avoid seizures. In each case, the device interacts directly with the
brain, substituting or compensating for a damaged component.

EMBS Standards Committee Chair Carole Carey Speaks on the Infrastructure of Standardization
at Drexel University
The IEEE-SA and EMB has been fostering partnership with Drexel University to promote
the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental and societal
challenges. Drexel's approach is innovation driven, biomed-focused standardization
adding a new Winter 2017 curriculum, "Standardization in Action: A Global Perspective."
The 11-week interdisciplinary course included a weekly guest speaker and is designed
to guide students in thinking critically about the technical, historical, socio-legal,
and philosophical aspects of standardization, and the role of university and civil
society in facing these challenges. On March 1, Carole talked about the socio-political-
technical "Infrastructure" of standardization, "Organization and Structure of a
Standards Making Body: IEEE-SA -- A globally recognized Standards Development Organization."
The course was a synergistic joining of industry, academics and subject matter expertise
to reinforce the curriculum and to provide students with "real world" views of standards.

Some internal help to the brain may be on the way in the form of memory prosthetics.
Once considered to be on the fringes of neuroscience, the idea of adding hardware
to the brain to help with memory has gathered steam. In fact, the age of the bionic
brain has already arrived. Neural prosthetics allow paralyzed people to move robotic
limbs, deaf people to hear through cochlear implants, and those with epilepsy to
avoid seizures. In each case, the device interacts directly with the brain, substituting
or compensating for a damaged component.

EMBS Standards Committee Chair Carole Carey Speaks on the
Infrastructure of Standardization at Drexel University
The IEEE-SA and EMB has been fostering partnership with Drexel
University to promote the importance of standards in meeting technical,
economic, environmental and societal challenges. Drexel's approach is
innovation driven, biomed-focused standardization adding a new Winter
2017 curriculum, "Standardization in Action: A Global Perspective."
The 11-week interdisciplinary course included a weekly guest speaker
and is designed to guide students in thinking critically about the
technical, historical, socio-legal, and philosophical aspects of
standardization, and the role of university and civil society in facing
these challenges. On March 1, Carole talked about the socio-political-
technical "Infrastructure" of standardization, "Organization and
Structure of a Standards Making Body: IEEE-SA -- A globally recognized
Standards Development Organization." The course was a synergistic
joining of industry, academics and subject matter expertise to
reinforce the curriculum and to provide students with "real world"
views of standards.

Tutorial 3: Continuous domain sparse recovery of biomedical image data
using structured low-rank approaches
Jong Chul Ye, from KAIST, South Korea, member of the EMBS Technical
Committee on Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing, will be
organizing a tutorial at ISBI'17 on " Continuous Domain Sparse Recovery
of Biomedical Image Data Using Structured Low-rank Approaches". In this
tutorial, we will provide a detailed review of recent advances in
structured low-rank matrix completion formulation, where the recovery
of a continuous domain image from its sparse measurements is
considered.

Committing to Memory
Some internal help to the brain may be on the way in the form of memory
prosthetics. Once considered to be on the fringes of neuroscience, the
idea of adding hardware to the brain to help with memory has gathered
steam. In fact, the age of the bionic brain has already arrived. Neural
prosthetics allow paralyzed people to move robotic limbs, deaf people
to hear through cochlear implants, and those with epilepsy to
avoid seizures. In each case, the device interacts directly with the
brain, substituting or compensating for a damaged component.
