For Vermeer though, not all Vermeers are equal and there is an inherent
problem with providence with Vermeers. Most of them were either
misidentified, or just lost, because Vermeer himself was an unknown
artist until the early 19th century. On top of that many of them are in
horrible shape. The girl with pearl earing is about 40% repainted
because it is in terrible condition with chipped paint. It was found in
a garage sale....
About 1/3 of Vermeers work are masterpieces. The rest is very very very
mundane.
