You know, instead of writing the above, it would have been a superb idea to say something like 'Thank you for refocussing on the real problem and providing a solution via example /etc/source.list lines and package-pinning settings for /etc/apt/preferences. _I've now read those carefully._ I appreciate and have learned from the hard work you put into that -- even though (actually) I've now changed my mind and am going to figure out how to adjust GRUB to boot the OS I want. But I wanted to reassure you that your trouble wasn't wasted, because I'm sure I'll need it later.'
That would have been a good thing to say because, y'know, I'm sure you'll need what I wrote later. But instead, the impression I'm getting is that you _didn't_ bother to read my careful explanation, which makes me sad.
