So just to be clear, that is the Laughing Calivier from the Wallace
collection in London, by far the greatest portrait I'd seen. It is a
simply amazing work which has to be experienced to be described.
Unlike the Duddly Moore script, the eyes actually do not follow you
around. In fact, it is just the opposite. The painting only looks
correct if you stand to the right of it. When you stand to the left,
its perspective seems warped.
To see what I'm talking about, see the study of photographs that I took
here which include wonderful detailed close ups of the abstract painting
that Hals accomplished while wrapping up the portrait in startly
realism.
