Ah, the Babylonian Captivity - not just for popes, any more.[1]
What we see there is from the reign of Nebuchadrezzar II of Babylon -- a man reputed to have had dreams needing interpretation. Who do you suppose might tell him the meaning of a huge tree being cut down? Anyone? Anyone? Young Belteshazzar with the funny accent?
(Cue chorus from Nabucco.)
[1] This would be a joke about the other, more metaphorical captivity, which of course was not the subject of any Chaldean image. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avignon_Papacy
