What Japan SHOULD have done !
True an invasion of the US West coast could not have been achieved by the Japanese successfully.
HOWEVER, the Japanese launched 2 of 3 planned air raids against Pearl Harbor.
The commander got cold feet after the 2nd, and called off the 3rd and retreated.
In retrospect, if they had brought along the invasion force they later assembled for the Midway Island attack, they would have easily captured Hawaii. =================================================================================================================
The Army and Marine forces there were negligible at the time in comparison.
Capturing Hawaii in December 1941 would have pushed the Pacific front more than half way across the Pacific against the US, and deprived the US of a critical forward base. It is estimated this would have had the following effects:
1. The disaster at Midway ( for Japan ) would have been avoided.
2. Pacific war would have been prolonged by 2 more years at least ( unless maybe the US used atom bombs, which we only could produce 2 of quickly. Many people don't know this: after the 2nd atom bomb drop, the US was "out of atomic ammo", and would have taken many months at least to produce more. ). If Japan had held out.....
3. In warly 1942 the US and the UK decided to concentrate the majority share of their military power against Germany, because it was seen as the more dangerous of the two. If Japan had captured Hawaii, surely the US would have disregarded the UK's recommendation, and deployed more resources against Japan. This would have delayed the Allies progress in the European / North African theatres, perhaps fatally: Germany might have had enough time to deploy super weapons, or, the Soviets might have captured ALL of western Europe. _______________________________________________ hangout mailing list hangout-at-nylxs.com http://www.nylxs.com/
