The much-anticipated annual vote, held this year at American Dialect
Society's convention in Austin, was concluded yesterday. This is a
society of linguists, lexicographers, and grammarians. Their flagship
event, bestowing of their annual award, crowns the one word _or phrase_
that most epitomized the year just ended, and that saw widespread or
innovative usage.
2016's winner: 'dumpster fire'
That is deemed to pithily capture the spirit of 2016, and, of course,
comes partly from things like the Brexit follies but largely from our
own Groper-in-Chief.
The Orange One also was the source or focus of almost all of the
runner-ups: 'normalize', 'deplorables', 'nasty woman', 'unpresidented',
'gaslight', 'alt-right', 'post-truth', 'tweetstorm', 'fake news',
'small/tiny hands', 'cuck/cuckservative', 'pussy', and 'yuge',
Awarded Euphemism of the Year: 'locker-room banter'
