Author Mohamad Bazzi seems to paint a good picture of the situation. One thing Americans tend to forget in all this: Civil wars are only very rarely like the 1861 to 1865 one where there were two clearly distinguished sides and where at least the shootings by standing armies ceased after four years. Civil wars much more typically involve dozens or hundreds of factions with fractally complex cross-hatreds that are almost impossible to ever end.
And sane outsiders stay away from them and count themselves lucky to be able to do so.
