Unlike you, I actually read Secretary of State Padilla's Statement of Vote from the most recent General Election. Any plausible division of California into five states would yield five states that vote more or less the way California does, primarily because each of the five would probably have a few significant cities in it.
Or, at least, it would require gerrymandering on a GOP Project REDMAP scale to carve out at least one that would vote for God, Trump, Pat Robertson, and the Need to Protect Our Precious Bodily Fluids Against Communism But Our Buddy Putin Is OK Despite His KGB Past. Might be possible if you go out of your way to make a state out of a bunch of mountain counties with hardly any people in the, though.
