The scar is still on Marla Hanson's right cheek, snaking down to the
corner of her mouth.
The one-time model was brutally slashed by a razor-wielding attacker in
1986 - an assault eerily similar to Wednesday's attack on Artende Gjeli
in Chinatown.
"In the beginning, it's just pure disbelief and shock," said Hanson, now
a 46-year-old mother, reflecting on her initial response. "You try to
get your mind around what's happened to you."
Hanson was targeted by a landlord who hired attackers after she turned
him down for a date. Gjeli, 26, was singled out by an ex-boyfriend three
months after she broke up with him, police said.
"Probably for her, the betrayal of somebody she used to care about is
the worst," Hanson said. "I think that would hurt even more, that
somebody you loved would betray you like that."
Hanson was just 24, an import from Missouri, when the landlord hired one
man to hold her down and a second to slice her up. Her injuries were
much worse than the wound suffered by Gjeli - but the psychic toll is
similar.
Hanson says situations like this remind her of the past, although it's
no longer a raw wound. Still, she tries to avoid news stories about
similar cases, since they tend to stir old memories.
"Thankfully, enough time has passed that I'm not retraumatized," she
said. "I've accepted that it's a part of me. It's an experience in life."
