What destabilised Iraq was not the cessation of our bleeding there, but
rather (1) a decade-plus of planners thinking it's perfectly fine for
the Baghdad alleged-government to be a Shi'a monopoly, and (2) the
2003-2008 BushCo occupation numbnuts' decision to put _all_ of Iraq's
competent military people out of work as Ba'athists and failure to
understand or care (pick any one, or two) that they just created an
enemy army in one single, breathtakingly incompetent step. And of
course (3) the mind-numbing stupidity of being there in the first place.
Given these horrific preceding blunders, Obama (not Secretary Clinton)
following Vermont Senator George Aiken's 1966 advice was basic prudence.
Sen. Aiken said:
The United States could well declare unilaterally... that we have
'won' in the sense that our armed forces are in control of most of the
field and no potential enemy is in a position to establish its
authority over South Vietnam, [and that such a declaration] would
herald the resumption of political warfare as the dominant theme in
Vietnam.
It may be a far-fetched proposal, but nothing else has worked.
(Aiken's thoughts are usually somewhat fuzzily but pithily remembered as
saying 'The United States should declare victory and go home.' But
either form will do.)
What destabilised Syria we've already covered.

Tell you what: You want to die for Baghdad, there are planes waiting.
Just don't try to kill my country's armed forces there or as part of any
other bugfuck crazy, neoconservative, lethal, multi-trillion-dollar
military boondoggle launched by idiots who worship the glory days of the
British Empire but understand nothing about it, and we'll be fine.
