This has been a slow list of late, largely because I've been away from
the keyboard, so I wanted to apologize for leaving things up in the air.
This is a note to just say where things are currently and what is in
store, and to hear any feed back.
First, since my classes ended I've been very involved with personal
matters. I settled my divorce at the cost of another 20K. After that I
had company come in from Israel which took a lot of my attention. I
ended up in Lake Placid for Memorial Day week (plus a few days) for some
much needed down time. Then when we got home, I ended up with 3
Broadway plays (The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof, and a play about
Oscar Wilde at BAM called Judas Kiss or something like that ). Then we
had a nice overnight at Smalls Jazz Club, a trip to the top of the
Empire State building at night, a trip to the Metropolitan Museum, a
fishing trip out of Sheepshead bay (or two), a trip to Citifeild to see
the Mets lose, several dinners at Le Marais and Mr Broadway, a trip to
the Cemetery on Fathers Day, Shavuot effectively consumed 3 days, a
shopping spree at Macy's, a 2 day trip to Washington DC to see the
National Gallery and Natural History museum (which is a dud), a visit to
the Brooklyn Museum which is really being run down to the ground by the
current new administration (idiots), seeing a few movies (Jungle Book,
Independence Day), walking over the Brooklyn Bridge (at dawn), several
great Shabbosim!, 2 visits to Coney Island, a tour of Boro Park for the
uninitiated, and a fantastic night drinking and smoozing on the Lower
East Side, and a tour of the Promanade and Brooklyn Bridge Park.... et al.

Since the company left, I've been preparing for my trip to Israel and
Europe. I'm going to see my kids, going to London on the 20th of July,
then Tel Aviv on July 26th. Leaving Israel on August 24th to Amsterdam
and leaving Amsterdam on the 30th.:

In London I'm hoping to see the National Gallery, the Wallace
Collection, The British Museum, The Tate, The The Fitzwilliam Museum in
Cambridge, Dulwich Picture Gallery, and the Royal Art collection at the
Bungingham Palace. It is too much, but I'm going to try.
In Israel, I will see my son at the Chofetz Chiam in Yerusalem, but I've
rented a place in Tzfat for the month at
Derech Hativat Yiftach 3/1, Tsfat with a fellow named Schmuel Rosenzeig.
Amsterdam include Shabbos at the Portuguese synagogue, the usual trip
the Rijks Museum which has two new Rembrandts on display, and Van Gough
and this time I want to see the Hals Museum in Harlem.... so I will,
before returning home.
So, the projects and classes we were working on before this storm of
activity was put on the shelf for a number of reason. First, I ramped
up because people asked, and so I did. And I showed up at activities
every time, nearly twice a week. But the folks who asked me to ramp up
didn't always show up, and dropped out, and that is a huge burden on me.
I don't mind doing it. I enjoy doing it, but without commitment, it is
just a not a big enough pay out for the community or myself for the cost
in time and labor. I would still like to do the Kernel programing and C
programming workshops, but I need commitments. I hate working by myself.
These are worthwhile things, and I can only encourage people to be
involved so much. I've been doing this for a long time and I'm getting
older and tired. I'd rather go fishing.
Also the NYLXS Journal needs an editor to put things together. I have
enough material that has been sitting here for 6 months. So it just
needs someone who wants to edit.
I wanted to finish some java programming on compiler theory that
involves Antlr. It is left over from my compiler class. I will get to
this when I return and classes begin, and anyone who wants to join is
welcome.
It is a big error to not be involved in computer work groups, and
organizations. The experience is not duplicatable on line. And you
can't get this kid of experience at work either or in an internship. It
is expansive without constraints and builds social and hacking
resources. The commitment is truly small and the upside is HUGE.
