Dear Mr. Safir:
Thank you for contacting me regarding your support for encryption. I share your strong support for individual liberty which is why I have supported safeguards for personal privacy throughout my tenure as a legislator. At the same time, we have a responsibility to safeguard our national security.
There are important equities on both sides of this current encryption debate that should be protected. This is why I have been encouraging technology companies and law enforcement to consider the big picture and work together to come up with a thoughtful solution. Tackling this issue with a piece-meal approach will not solve the broader problem. This conversation is most productive when parties on both sides abandon fixed positions and come together with an open mind.
I understand the strong emotions involved in this debate. Personal privacy remains a bedrock principal of our country, even as we navigate this new exciting information age. It is for this reason that I have supported legislation, such as the USA Freedom Act, providing additional sufficient safeguards for individual privacy in our surveillance rules and ending bulk metadata collection. I plan to continue my efforts to ensure citizens privacy and protections under the law.
