Trying several discs that are _known good in other drives_ would be the essential cross-check. Notably, trying discs that were commercially pressed (metaphorically pressed) rather than burned on a CDR drive, would be the best way.
This is pretty much basic diagnosis: If you have several related items each of which might be causing a problem, you can test each by either moving it to a different chain elsewhere and see if the symptom moves with the item, or you can replace the item in the original chain with one known-good and see if the symptom goes away.

Sounds like the likely cause.
