well yes putting it on a secure network is crazy talk.
but that's not what its meant for. its meant for home networks for
things like internet video games.
before what you would have to do is statically map a mac address in
the DHCP server to an IP address, next open a port out of a possible
vendor defined range, then configure the listen port in the
application. all of this is child's play for you and I but for many
users it was a major pain.
so the game manufacturers commissioned an RFC
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6970 then they bugged Microsoft and all
of the home router manufacturers to implement it.
incidentally many good routers have ways you can lock it down, such as
only allow it from certain IP's, and restricting the possible port
numbers. that said I'm still waiting on a version which requires some
kind of authentication and or 3rd party approval.
