Them saying 'Oh, yeah, you can drop your fit-PC into a 1U slot' means the guy you spoke with at Panix was in touch with his inner asshole, and probably thought your taking his absurd advice would be kinda hilarous.
Using a fit-PC as a colo host would be a dumb idea.
All models of fit-PC are less than 1U (1.75") high, so in that sense yes you can 'drop one into the slot'. Of course, you'd better have a shelf mounted in that 'slot' or else your bitty box will fall like Newton's apple, because it's not a rackmount machine -- and I don't even think there's a rackmount replacement faceplate, either because colos are simply not CompuLab's market. You dig? Not. Their. Market.
If you were determined to put such machines in 1U of rented colo 19" rackspace, you would be _best_ advised to put _three_ of them on a shelf, sideways (as 6.29" x 3 is just under 19").
But, honestly, _that would be kinda crazy_. When you're paying a huge load of money for high-bandwith access in a colo, and allowed to slurp all the AC power you want on someone else's dime, why use low-power-consumption bitty boxes? In that use-case, you'd want to cram all the CPU power you could into that expensive space.
Which I believe should be sufficient to underline the main point: Colos are _so very_ not CompuLab's market.
