I'm not certain that you are only paying for losing the fan, and I am
sure that using the fan is the best thing one can do if you want
equipment that will work for a long time, as you and I have both run
desktops and servers over a decade.
HP Work Station we talked about is nearly 2K and it is protected by a
SINGLE 2 dollar fan. I'm sick of losing equipment to fans, especially
laptops. But in addition, its an Intel Xeon Processor, which is not
better than even the i7? It specs to 32 gigs of ram, somewhat ordinary
for high end machines these days, but the video supports 7x independent
displays, not that I need that with X11 but impressive enough still for
teaching or lecturing, TWO gigabyte ETH ports, and built in
wifi....hardware RAID
Did I mention it has a SIMS slot? No shit.
And the best part is it gives you the specs down to the last detail
which really makes kernel optimization and hardening a doable thought.
5 year warrantee? Does that exist in IT?
It does a lot more than the HP Workstation.

I prices one for 3275 with the xeon
WiFi 802.11ac + two antennas [W]
4 x GbE + 4 x USB [FMLANE4U4] FACE MODULE
mSATA 256GB [M256S]
2x 1 TB HDD [H2X1T]
Linux Mint preinstalled
Discrete Graphics card Quadro M4000 [GQM4000]
2 x 16 GB [D32]
Xeon E3-1285 V4 [CE31285LV4]
I don't even think I want the graphics card.
