Several years ago, Wired UK wrote a profile piece about my privacy work. I wasn't aware they were writing the piece, they never contacted me for any quotes or informed me they were planning to publish anything about me, so you can imagine my surprise when I was approached at a privacy event in Brussels and congratulated on the piece by several individuals.
It was really something quite special for me, being a Wired reader since they launched and I have since contributed to many stories they have written on privacy. One could accuse me of being something of a fan.
But if that same story were published today - I would not even be able to read it and it is likely that many other privacy conscious individuals wouldn't be able to read it either. Why? Because many of us are presently using adblocking tools to protect our privacy and security from illegal tracking, profiling and malvertising and currently if you are using such tools, Wired blocks you from reading their content.
So today I stopped following Wired on Twitter because frankly, what is the point? Their Twitter feed is used to promote stories - stories I and many others can no longer read because we value our privacy.
I would much rather see Wired lead the way by forcing the adtech industry to behave more ethically, than going to war with their readers. As I said to publishers recently at an event in Germany - they are the ones with the audience, they are top of the value chain and they should be the ones in control of the content on their web sites - not adtech.
Sadly Wired have chosen to go the route of attacking their readers rather than defending them by removing intrusive scripts from their web site; it is a bizarre move and one I feel they will ultimately live to regret.
I am ending this piece with a quote from Wired from that very same profile piece they wrote in 2010:
"Inconvenient as it may be for advertisers and media owners, Alex Hanff and his colleagues remind us that the future remains unwritten. They stretch the conversation away from the easy assumption that being digital revolves exclusively around consuming goods, services and advertising. For that, we should thank them."
... but instead they choose to block us.
