Last time I did a minimal install of Debian Stable, you did it by
proceeding through installing the base system only, and quit the
installer at the stage of picking additional software. (Any needed
packages can then be added as required using apt-get.) I think that was
about 300MB. Of course, add a few hundred more if you append things
like X11 and a window manager.
But by most people's standards that qualifies as 'light'.
Are you perhaps one of those people who think installing a distribution
always means repeatedly whacking your forehead on the space bar until it
completes all default actions? Because that would be sad, given that
the whole point of open source is to put us in charge.
I'm actually going to see how tiny Debian Jessie can be for the host OS
I'll be using to run KVM + Qemu for my new VM-oriented server build.
grsecurity + PaX for the kernel, OpenRC for the init, and as little of
everything as I can manage.
