As in, you expressed a polite request well in advance (and in writing, so as to leave a solid record) for a means to RSVP via other means, you were ignored or brushed off, you went there, and you were ejected for lack of a Meetup, Inc. RSVP?
If you didn't bother to do that first bit, you were politically naive and I have limited sympathy.
If that _is_ what you did (which frankly is not in character for you, Ruben, as it requires patience, planning, and tact), then it just needs to be written off as 'People who make really foolish decisions, when called on them, pretty much always react by immediately doubling down, and can seldom learn, other than the hard way.'
Hey, Brian, you might want to append 'a wholly owned subsidiary of Meetup, Incorporated' to NYLUG's Web page footer. (You're welcome! ;-> )
Now that I'm editor of not only LDP's Linux User Group HOWTO but also DMOZ's listing of Linux user groups, I might get around to mildly mocking in _both_ places groups that make this particular hapless screw-up. I already have a slightly scathing comment in the LUG HOWTO.
