SUBJECT | Subject: [Hangout-NYLXS] Parse Trees and Terrence Parr
|
Terrence Parr is the young man who wrote antlr, which is pretty impressive. But he keeps saying something about parsing that drives me crazy.
Here is a presentation that he makes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=398&v=q8p1voEiu8Q
Somewhere at about 5 minutes in he keeps saying that the human brain works like a computer in parsing, reading letter by letter, and searching for whitespace.
This is absolutely wrong. Human intelligence does not work like a computer. It is designed to recognize patterns from the ground up. NOBODY other than a child, reads sentences letter by letter. We don't even read word by word, unless we are stumbling around. We reckognize sentences as patterns. Like every other intelligence we have, we fill in expected parts of a pattern, even if it doesn't exist. We will add words to sentences. We never break things down char by char.
