Yay, Meetup, the solution to _everyone's_ problems!
Anyway, Brian, I notice http://www.nylug.org/ says '(RSVP usually required)' -- emphasis added. What would be excellent as an improvement would be providing a parallel method for non-Meetup users to RSVP without joining the Borg. That's what I did during my last few years running monthly events for BayLISA, and it worked fine.
Meetup issues have now come up frequently enough locally (Left Coast) that I wrote a rant about it, following my sysadmin guild BayLISA going whole-hog for mandatory Meetup usage, and outsourcing just about everything to it. http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Essays/meetup.html
(As Dennis Miller used to say, way back when he was still funny, 'But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.')
Because I notice you seem to be Meetup, Inc.'s contact at NYLUG, I'll understand completely, if you'll now need to publicly justify dumb outsourcing. Human nature. ;-> I suggest starting with 'Meetup brings in more people' and 'Having all RSVPs in one place and outsourced to a single company makes things simpler for me.' That's a now-traditional debating stance.
