Hi Ruben,
Over the last decade, virtualization led to an explosion in the number of machines in our infrastructure, and we were all caught off guard. It turns out that those shell scripts did not scale after all. Lucky for us configuration management swooped in to save the day.
But today we have a new challenge. We're moving away from node-based infrastructures where hostnames are chosen with care. Gone are the days of pinning one service to a specific host and wearing a pager in case that host goes down.
We're in the era of containers, and already seeing that traditional tools are showing a few cracks because they weren't designed for this level of application portability. Enter CoreOS - a Linux distribution designed specifically for application containers and running them at scale.
In this presentation from the 2015 Velocity Santa Clara Complete Video Compilation, Kelsey Hightower introduces CoreOS and its components, including etcd, fleet, docker, and systemd, and shows you how these components work together to solve the problems of today and tomorrow. Please enjoy this presentation for free. And welcome to the era of containers!

P.S. Container orchestration is one of the topics Velocity attendees say they can't get enough of. At Velocity 2016 (June 20-23 in Santa Clara, CA), you'll find plenty of coverage of Docker, CoreOS, Kubernetes, Mesos, and all the other tools in the container ecosystem. Registration is open now and Best Price is available through March 31. We'd love to see you there: http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1znl9dn6r2jvdu7v3obk8r18hc4pese8tghu27spg
