*Blackbird Nation Soars During Homecoming Weekend*
More than 1,000 past, present, and future Blackbirds came out in
Brooklyn blue to celebrate *Homecoming Weekend 2016.* On Saturday,
women's basketball earned a well-deserved victory over the Fairleigh
Dickinson Knights 65-62. The men's team lost with :17 left, 85-88, to
Fairleigh Dickinson. Check out photo galleries from all the festivities

*LIU Brooklyn Hosts Sanford Inspire Event*
LIU Brooklyn welcomed more than 300 teachers from across 15 New York
City school districts and New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña
on *February 1* for a Sanford Inspire Professional Development event.
LIU partnered with the New York City Department of Education to present
the program, which focused on providing educators with proven tools and
strategies to create an interactive, inspiring environment that
encourages student learning at all grade levels.

*LIU Pharmacy Inducts 28 /Phi Lambda Sigma/ Members*
On *February 1*, 28 student pharmacists were inducted as the newest
members of the LIU Pharmacy's /Beta Kappa/ Chapter of /Phi Lambda
Sigma/. LIU Pharmacy Dean John Pezzuto and Dr. Rutesh Dave were also
inducted as honorary members. It was the largest class of students
inducted into the society by the College. The guest speaker was an
alumnus, Mr. Michael Fedita'72, M'75 (15), owner of J&J Pharmacy.

*Scrollathon*
Over 80 students participated in workshops hosted by artists Steven and
William Ladd. Our student's creations will contribute to a 40x40 foot
mural that will be permanently featured in the New City Point Mall in
downtown Brooklyn. The mural will consist of over 500 blown class beans
and 30,000 handmade paper-mâché beads made from recycled paper collected
from around the area. LIU is the first college/university to partner
with this project.

*Valerie Simpson Presents /Richard Smallwood and Vision/ at Kumble
Theater*
Multi-award winning gospel sensation /Richard Smallwood and Vision/
captured the hearts of guests at an event on*January 27*. The evening
included a presentation by legendary songwriter, producer, and performer
Valerie Simpson and featured some of the original hits performed by the
choir over their twenty-year history. Guests were completely absorbed by
the ensemble's stylistic vocals, accompanied by the artistry of
/Vision's/ live band. Singer, Songwriter and Composer Richard Smallwood
was himself one of three pianists to offer chords of music which invited
the audience to further bask in the spirited atmosphere.

*Scott McLaughlin Named Head Women's Soccer Coach*
Scott McLaughlin has been named head women's soccer coach. McLaughlin
spent one season with Stony Brook University and helped the St. John's
women's program reach new heights in his role as assistant coach.

* *Tiffany Cooley* '02, *Lizelle Jackson* '07, *Bryan Steele* '06, and
*Chris Zook* '69, were inducted into the LIU Brooklyn Athletics Hall
of Fame on January 30.
* *Martin Hermannsson* '18 was named Northeast Conference Men's
Basketball Co-Player of the Week. Hermannsson put together an
impressive week, averaging 21.5 points, 7.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds
and 3.5 steals, while shooting 52.1% from the floor and 80.0% from
the line.
* *Cassandra Jones* '17 claimed her third Northeast Conference Women's
Track Athlete of the Week accolade after setting another personal
best in the 400m dash and setting a new school record in the 4x400m
relay.
* *Roderick Moodie* '19 has been named the NEC Men's Rookie Athlete of
the Week, following his record-breaking performance in the 60m hurdles.

*Important Information*
FUN (Family University) After School & Evening Program for School Age
and Early Childhood children (3-13) of LIU students currently has
openings available. FUN is a low-cost, child-centered, arts and inquiry
based program with hands-on creative projects. Part of the School of
Education (located at 9 Hanover Place) FUN is open fall & spring
semesters when classes are in session from 3:30-8:30pm Monday -
Thursday. Program fees range from $25 - $100 per semester, per LIU
student (there is no additional cost if a student enrolls more than one
child in the program). Childcare is flexible, so students can drop-off
and pick-up their children at any time during program hours. For more
