Humans unconsciously combine letters into words before recognizing
grammatical structure while reading. As adults, we are so good at it
that we don’t notice it. Beginning readers, on the other hand, move
along with their fingers trying to sound out the words.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think it is interesting that this paragraph in the textbook is not
true at all, but is the authors impression. It is true that humans
start learning written language as children by sounding it out, but what
they are doing is creating a memory of a shape to a sound to a cognitive
meaning. Animal intelligence is pattern matchers. That is why logic is
so hard to learn and more difficult to practice.
It is the shape of a word, or even a series of words, in a familiar
context, that creates a cognitive meaning. The human mind takes in the
entire phrase at once, and if need be, if they can't understand it, goes
back to identify individual words, and eventually individual letters.
They do not magically spell familiar word out in their mind, letter by
letter....never. We would never be able to read. If the grammar of a
sentence, or even a paragraph, is messed up, we have difficulty reading
the words and stumble over the sentence, trying to fit words into the
sentence that might not even be on the page. His assumption is
completely wrong.
