It seems what triggered this guy was his manhandling with child custody,
something close to my heart.

We aren't sure this is suicide, yet. Yes, he talked about that, but also
seemed to come around and say he would spend the rest of his time
fighting police brutality, and he talked about making a blog post about
what happened but never did.
As the time went on his tweets got less intelligible. It could be
overdose OR head trauma from the beating maybe?
Dumb to speculate, but I wouldn't call it suicide until we really have
all the details. It could be murder, could be anything.

The state of Indiana.
Criminal case in Ian's home state of Indiana shows only two traffic
violations for Ian - in one the magistrate in his case, Marcy Levinsky,
has been my judge as well (terrible thing)). I have not seen even a
pretense for impartiality. Looks exactly as she sounds. She has been
eventually fired (I hope) in any case no longer there, but could have
likely given him a bad time:

https://mycase.in.gov/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=4636611
Ian's civil case:
https://mycase.in.gov/CaseDetail.aspx?CaseID=12255269
His divorce case was at the same time as mine and at the same place,
Allen County, Indiana. I am pretty familiar with that place. Ian's
divorce judge Thomas Felts, in the past has been dyi judge I heard,
until he has been pulled over by a cop at Indianapolis central square,
Monument Circle, but instead of putting his gear at park, put it in
reverse hitting that cop's car that was behind with his car. When asked
by a cop to give a breath sample - the judge refused, has been delivered
to jail, refused to consent to an alcohol test sample there as well and
only much later agreed to it (could he been already below legal limit or
can be plausibly suspected of having had enough time to make calls to
get prearranged sample). Interestingly that he is still a judge out
there, now apparently dealing with divorces. Rumors are he is quite
unreasonable towards men in his cases. If so Ian might have found it
unjustified. In any case a divorce court orders can be reasonably
suspected to be aligned more with a county best financial interests than
merits of a case, as an US county get more money into their coffins from
feds, as more divorce resulting with child support they have. It is a
financial benefit to every american county government, the last time I
checked, per U.S.C. Section 42 Title IV-D, providing 66% of the amount
of child support that non-custodian pays to custodian, to county
agencies from coffins of the federal government and as much as a county
court decides. Also additional federal funds proportionate to child
support enforcement, as well as for a foster care, another kickback from
feds fo counties at counties courts own discretion but this time per
Title IV-E, totaling in about $5million per annum for Allen county where
Ian divorced if I recall correctly. So the less parenting time with his
child a non-custodial parent gets by court order the more child support
he pays per Indiana parenting guidelines (issued by Indiana Supreme
court, note - not a legislature), the more cash a county gets from feds,
the more bonuses they can assign to themselves and their fellow
co-conpirators. And more children got into foster care (about 1200 per
annum in Indiana), the better chances a court or its supporting agencies
collectively known as court whores [for providing courts a plausible
deniability defense while profiteering from it as well] can get as a
bribe for selecting as a foster parent a generous child molester or just
a fellow profiteer, eager to collect child support from real parents for
years to come while not being able to see their natural child any more
and paying for it, while getting dough from feds to county coffins as
well, that they can redirect to their own benefits. There is an
incentive to courts to not give a child custody to a higher earner of
two parents (a notable exception is a surgeon, under who's discretion in
case of a surgery a judge would not plausibly want come under while
screwing up his parenting case).
Another judge in the same Allen County, now dismissed, has been found in
indecently, using foul language in the court room not under his
jurisdiction. Their Sheriff openly admitted of people under his custody
in his jail got raped (black on white male on male most likely), while
complaining that he cannot prevent it unless more money given to his
agency. Its plausible Ian as well as Swartz with their suicides, as well
as Tom Ball who put himself on file in from on New Hampshire court and
many others tried to avoid chances of being gang-rape routinely by
likely getto raised youngsters of the same gender. Besides with no legal
access to courts for prisoners, allowed only to file complains to
[often] private prison administration through grievances, there is good
chances to never be able to get out from prison, as being paid $.24 /
hour (Blago apparently gets 12 cents per hour in Chicago prison for
calling things as they are) versus producing a least $7.25 / hour a
minimal wage for being sold to a prison slave labor using businesses, -
about $14K annual incentive per person to prison administration owned
by, well.. you can guess it right, with power to keep you on as long as
they want on technicalities at their own discretion.
How about Appeal court and a Supreme court you may ask. Well, Indiana
court of Appeal would gladly take you divorce case with all cash charges
that it implies but has always quoted me a precedent that they are not
in a position to question county judge discretion who can according to
them be is a better position to make a judgement, therefore deeming
themselves worthless from divorce court litigant perspective. Ian
apparently has not appealed here. He could have been properly advised.
Indiana is a weird place. Lawyers call they disciplinary commission "a
whitewashing commission", acknowledging books might have been cooked on
the high level in Indiana:

One Indiana Supreme court judge failed to recuse himself from reviewing
the case from Appellate court that he himself has signed when having
been an appellate judge on that particular case, more disturbingly other
Supreme Court justices did not bother to restore trivial judicial
misconduct by their fellow supreme court judge. While the lawyer
questioning that decision with SCOTUS, guess what, has been disciplined
and suspended from practicing law in Indiana by the very same Indiana
Supreme court:

Indiana legal system cannot be dismantled from inside since everyone in
it is an insider and profit from it or in the least case a collaborator.
Deb and Ian have been the victims of an evil 'system' that took them for
a ride that could have been a root cause of this tragedy, as tens of
millions unnamed others have been the victims too in this now land of
the slaves. Its time for a change, and for that we need auditable paper
ballots instead of voting machines of questionable origin, independent
observers from abroad at our elections, and a new POTUS who be able
appoint someone like Larry Clayman or Paul Ogden as next federal
secretary of justice to clean up the stables that were full of manure
for quite a while. Police brutality btw has been a consequence of failed
justice system, unwilling to fix it, not a thing by itself.
