Dear Friend,
It’s no secret that getting a college degree offers students the best chance of succeeding in today’s competitive job market. Unfortunately, repaying the loans that paid for that college degree can derail a career even before it starts.
I’m pleased to announce that help is on the way just in time for the new year, thanks to a brand-new student loan forgiveness program that will cover up to two years of loans for recent graduates. Announced by Governor Cuomo, the program, dubbed Get on Your Feet, will accept applications starting tomorrow, December 31.
Studies have shown that the burden of repaying student loans presents a challenge that can cripple young people years after graduation, making it impossible for them to buy a home or start a small business. Defaulting on loans can prevent graduates from ever realizing the goals that inspired them to pursue a college education in the first place.
To qualify for the program, applicants must have earned an undergraduate degree from a college or university located in New York State in or after December 2014, have an adjusted gross income of less than $50,000, be enrolled in the federal Income Based Repayment plan or Pay as You Earn plan, and live in New York currently. Recipients will have a maximum of 24 payments, equal to their monthly student loan repayment amount, paid on their behalf.
