Many distros have been known to, by default, play games with Web browser configuration. Notably, though, Debian Project's packaging policy forbids packagers from including essentially all changes adverse to the user's privacy.
Personally, I think it's immaterial what the default search engine is, as that's high on the list of items the user should -always- set to his/her preference. (I prefer DuckDuckGo, mostly.)
If you find that 'sobering', I think many worse shocks await you, if/when you check further into the state of desktop Linux.
