Dear LIU Community,
As we continue to open new doors of learning and opportunity, we take
pride when our efforts produce success. With the fall semester drawing
to a close, this is an excellent time to stop and celebrate the
achievements of our University.
Our students continue to distinguish themselves with their academic
achievements. LIU undergraduate and graduate students have received
grants, scholarships, and other honors from a wide range of prestigious
organizations, including the National Science Foundation, the Fulbright
Program, and the National Association of Social Workers. Students have
presented at conferences, including the Society for Integrative and
Comparative Biology and the International Hemingway Conference,
presenting both their own independent research and collaborative work
with members of the faculty.
Our faculty members continue to represent the University with
distinction across the country and around the world. In recent months,
LIU professors presented at conferences in London, Shanghai, and Vienna,
and were published in prestigious academic journals, including the
/Journal of Early Childhood Literacy/, the /Journal of the Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics, /the /International Journal of Education and
Social Sciences/, and /Pediatrics./
LIU professors have also played a key role in our work with the national
Sanford Education Collaborative. LIU is revolutionizing the way nearly
10,000 children learn and thrive in over 470 classrooms across 53 New
York schools, spearheading the Northeast region expansion of two
groundbreaking programs – Sanford Harmony and Sanford Inspire – based on
the vision of legendary entrepreneur and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford.
Our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom, as leaders in
the community, and on the fields of competition. LIU teams claimed two
conference titles and competed in four NCAA Championship tournaments
during the fall season, while also contributing their time and effort to
such worthy causes as Island Harvest, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,
and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, to name a few.
The LIU community remains a shining example of a university committed to
improving the world around us and actively supporting our community. Our
students and faculty have given of their time, energy, and talents to
feed the homeless and hungry, raise money for an orphanage in Tanzania,
and support such worthy organizations as the American Cancer Society and
the Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation fighting pediatric cancer. In
the coming weeks, LIU Cares, a multi-campus, multi-dimensional
initiative, will further illuminate the power of service through
volunteerism and community engagement.
LIU is moving forward, with a continued focus on creating new
opportunities for our students and preparing them for the challenges of
the modern world. As we work toward the goals articulated in our
strategic plan, /Education Beyond Boundaries: LIU 2020, /we eagerly
anticipate the realized benefits for LIU students and faculty and the
new levels of distinction we are achieving as a university.
LIU’s library facilities have undergone significant renovations,
designed to create a more welcoming environment befitting a true center
of intellectual life that is conducive to impactful scholarship and the
exchange of ideas. These improvements are complemented by the ongoing
introduction of “smart classrooms” and improved Wi-Fi access throughout
the Post and Brooklyn campuses, enhancing the educational opportunities
available to the entire LIU community. Simultaneous upgrades to LIU’s
dining and laundry facilities have also improved the LIU student experience.
Our record level of financial strength enables us to pursue increasingly
higher levels of academic achievement and national prominence. For the
twelve months ended October 31, 2015, net assets grew approximately
$32.8 million, and the endowment was valued at $116.5 million, an
increase of 18.1 percent over the prior year. An additional transfer to
the endowment of $20 million is scheduled for December 31, 2015. In
addition, the University’s financial responsibility ratios, as
calculated by the U.S. Department of Education, reached a perfect 3.0
this year.
The ever-increasing support of our alumni and donors has been vital in
establishing our financial position. Our “Thankful for YOU at LIU”
alumni campaign launched with great success, as more than 330 alumni
participated in the annual day of giving at Brooklyn and Post, raising
tens of thousands of dollars. We remain optimistic that our stewardship
efforts have been well received, and we anticipate a banner year for
major gifts across the University.
As a community, we celebrate the achievements of our students and
faculty, and as we reflect on our continued progress, we take pride in
our efforts to build and strengthen our University.
Thank you for all you do each day for LIU. We look forward to
celebrating our continued achievement in the New Year.
Regards,
Dr. Kimberly R. Cline
