EXPERIENCE ISRAEL
Recently, we sat down with two participants from Onward Israel, an
internship program in Israel for Jews aged 18-30, to hear about their
2015 summer experiences — and we were blown away by their enthusiasm!
The program began in 2012 with 265 participants and has grown to the
1350 scheduled to arrive this year as program organizers work to
increase the number of Birthright and teen programs alumni who return to
Israel for a second visit. This type of programming is crucial to
sustaining high levels of Jewish and Israel engagement by Birthright
participants, who take their important experiences back with them to the
US to serve as Israel advocacy leaders and sources of information on
their campuses and among their local communities and peers.

HELPING VULNERABLE ISRAELIS
Young people can make a difference.
That may sound like a sound byte to some, but there is nothing more
encouraging to struggling communities in Israel’s periphery towns than
seeing young college students take action in their community.
The Jewish Agency for Israel’s Choosing Tomorrow program makes this
happen by encouraging college students studying at universities in
Israel’s geographic and social peripheries in the Negev, Galilee, and
Jerusalem to initiate and perform community service and join activities
that focus on leadership development and regional issues in exchange for
college scholarships.
One Choosing Tomorrow participant, Shai Pinhasi, a 23-year-old from
south Tel Aviv-Jaffa, is volunteering with children from his hometown.

Food co-ops are coming to Israel’s periphery in 2016, courtesy of The
Jewish Agency for Israel in partnership with Israel Venture Network and
the Jewish federations of New York and Washington, D.C.
Following the 2011 social protests against the high living costs in
Israel, The Jewish Agency created a strategic plan to further assist
Israel's geographic and social periphery by creating a chain of food
cooperatives in disadvantaged areas throughout the country.
Called Tzarchaniyat Ha'Ir ("CityMart"), the first co-op opened in Sderot
on Dec. 21, and another is planned to open in Arad this month.
The co-ops will use a social business model to transform the landscape
of the food industry in Israel’s periphery. Volunteers will deliver food
and offer transportation to elderly and homebound. In addition, the
co-ops will incorporate social programming such as early education and
youth mentoring programs.

ISRAEL IN YOUR COMMUNITY
During the two years Yael Gertel spent representing Israel as a Jewish
Agency for Israel Fellow (shlicha) at the University of Maryland Hillel,
she had an important takeaway: It wasn’t enough just to bring Israel to
America.
“I felt that if we want to create a united Jewish culture, Jewish
communities from all over the world must inspire each other,” the
29-year-old reflected recently.
Today Yael works as the personal assistant to the Director General of
The Jewish Agency for Israel, Dr. Alan Hoffmann, continuing her work to
promote Jewish life and community around the globe.
In the spirit of Hanukkah she wanted to share this message: “In the
words of Abraham Joshua Heschel: 'In a free society, some are guilty,
but all are responsible', meaning, there is much work that needs to be
done, so we might as well start working!”
ALIYAH
We are happy to announce that Jews are continuing to make Aliyah in
record numbers this year. These new immigrants have realized that
despite the current, challenging security environment, Israel offers
safety, home, and opportunity.
In fact, just two days after a deadly terrorist attack in Be’er Sheva, a
ceremony was held to launch a program called ‘Etzion’ for Olim who have
chosen to tie their futures to this southern city.
The Etzion program, under the auspices of The Jewish Agency for Israel,
involves the participation of nearly 200 young immigrants and members of
Project MASA, aged 22-35, from around the Jewish world. Among them are
dozens of doctors and psychologists seeking to strengthen the health
care system and to integrate employment at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.
