Well my high school bought it for me
I had an " independent study class" where they had me building linux servers to do things like auto dial an ISP and use ip masqerading to provide internet access to all the computers attached to the thin net ethernet networks in the computer rooms.
It was an easy credit for me, because I already had a part time after school job as a Jr. Linux Sysadmin, and they didn't have to get a phone line and modem for every computer in the school :) a win win for every one.

did they not predate that? My first purchases were from Wallnut Creek
and downloading slackware from ftp.cdrom.com? or from sunsite? 144
floppy disks for the OS, downloaded over 200 baud model or there abouts.
It took about 2 weeks to download, but I didn't have money for a disk.
Nothing has changed maybe, I'm still broke
