My experience has been that, in general, people will default to doing what
is easiest rather than what gives them the most privacy. To give concrete
examples, if you ask your friends to exchange encrypted email with you using
GPG or send you text messages with Red Phone, they're not likely going to
want to deal with those things. From what I can surmise, it's not so much
that they don't care, but rather that they dislike the uncomfortable feeling
of not understanding the tools to use for doing encrypted communications
that would protect their privacy. The typical response is something like "I
don't have time", i.e. "I'd rather spend my time elsewhere".
It's usually the more technically-minded people that seem to be willing to
try Linux on their laptop, and I've yet to see this done for the reason
being privacy. It's usually more along the lines of wanting to try Linux,
or wanting to install an OS that doesn't have a monetary cost for it.
