Of course, attitudes to this problem are various.
My mother had a mostly sucky last ten or so years of her life, but did
what she could with it, and her slogan during that period was: 'Do as
well as you can for as long as you can.'
The classic American attitude (more West than NYC) is: If your life
sucks, start over and remake yourself. I think it's a kind of
craziness, but I'll be damned if I haven't seen people make it work.
Me, I'd not ever do that in any sense of the concept, but I do keep
finding things to enjoy in life. Including the company of friends.
