Absolutely, my single-storey small ranch-style 1956 deteched house is an
ideal case of sorts for detector coverage.
One of the many reasons my heart goes out to the Sassoon family is that
they were so very blameless and normal: The hotplate being defective
is what caused the fire, something nobody could expect. It's horrifying
ot contemplate that every other Orthodox family does exactly the same
thing with a probably near-identical hotplate, because keeping your
kitchen working over Shobbos needs something exactly like that. But in
this case, one family has seven dead children from doing what everyone
else does.
So, I feel the horror of it, and the hospitalised parents' own horror is
surely unbearable.
The difficult bit:
The Sassoons' residence is a house with two storeys and a basement. The
cited news story said firefighters found only one smoke detector total,
in the basement. Smoke travels up. The fire started above the basement.
I am not going to state any opinion on any aspect of the above. I'm
merely stating facts. And then adding nothing else but empathy.
Because of the empathy.
Absolutely, escape routes, fire extinguishers, clear hallways,
unlockable and openable doors and windows, and a lot more are good parts
of safety planning, and existence of smoke detectors in no way equates
to safety.
I will also gently point out that neither 'Vos Iz Neis' nor, reportedly,
NYFD claimed that smoke detectors make you safe.
